Safety Design in Buildings, Cairo Conference October 17, 2016

SDiB is the leading debating platform for safety and fire professionals in the construction industry. Initiated in collaboration with Intersec in 2012, the Safety Design in Buildings conference campaign debates safety standards and practices in the built environment. Expert Talks for an improved protection of people and buildings take place annually and are presented in every Gulf Country and Cairo.

The current cycle of events investigates concepts of integration for safety and security related aspects of high occupancy buildings with a view to strategy planning, material, system requirements.

The conference brings leading Fire Safety Consultants, Architects, Engineers and Testing Experts together with Safety System Suppliers to give updates on industry standards and provide a debating platform for best practice.

The conference provides its participants with insights to:

“The Jezan Hospital Fire Tragedy from an Engineering Point of View”

On the 24th of December, 2015 Saudi Ministry of Health lost 25 patients in Jazan Hospital fire. In his presentation, engineer Alzaid will share the investigation findings and focus on the engineering failures that caused such high fatalities. His presentation is supported by video coverage, photos and drawings of the incident. The main purpose of the presentation is to avoid such horrific tragedies from re-happening.

“Integrating Safety & Security Systems in Assembly Occupancies – Case Study of Stadiums”

To balance our busy work lives, we take time off to watch a football match, go to a movie or take a vacation to visit Holy places or tourist destinations. Popular places with high occupancies however have made the news not only for the unique and peaceful nature of events, but also for incidents of grief and sorrow because of overcrowding, stampedes or security lapses.

In this context the presenter introduces case studies of Stadiums which are coming into prominence with regional events like Expo 2020 in Dubai and FIFA 2022 in Qatar. His focus will be on safety and security strategies and technologies applied from the parking area to the playing arena.

For several years now we have been raising awareness about the dangers of combustible panels on facades, and recommending a course of action to prioritise, review and risk assess the existing building stock. Now that this is becoming a reality, Andy Dean provides guidance on a recommended focus and guidance on what to do and what to look for.
