The latest innovation by Esteri Group, Finland’s most comprehensive operator in the firefighting and rescue sector, is a high-performance ‘portable’ pump that is also suitable for helicopter transportation. The diesel-powered pump can be quickly transferred to any demanding location, which provides better conditions for the success of firefighting activities, e.g. in the case of wildfires.
Last year, Finland’s Esteri Group delivered its new product, the first Ester ASL unit to the Åland Rescue Department. Esteri ASL (Air, Sea and Land) is a diesel-engine-powered high-performance pump with either 10,000 litre or 6,000 litre fire pump models – Esteri 10,000 ASL and Esteri 6000 ASL. The device weighs a fair 2,000kg, so it can be transported by a trailer, van or even a helicopter.
The high-performance pump was flown by a Border Guard helicopter and tested in the early summer of 2020, before then being delivered to the customer. This product is one that is also of interest to industrial operators. There are industrial fire brigades and industrial plants in Finland where this kind of fire protection is needed. Over the last four years, there have been industrial fires where, for example, the availability of water has been problematic due to, among others, the capacity and/or condition of the factory/plant’s own firefighting water systems.
Esteri ASL has been manufactured with technical requirements in accordance with the wishes of the rescue services. The size and weight of the product allows it to be transferred quickly to islands, the decks of ships and even within the mainland.
Main features of Esteri 6,000 ASL and 10,000 ASL
The main components of this Esteri ASL are
- Esteri fire pump 10-6,000 or 10-10,000
- Esteri VKN clutch for pump engagement
- Electric or piston primer
- Marine-type diesel engine
- Esteri control panel LCD
The pump is powered by a marine-type diesel engine. The cooling water of the motor heat exchanger comes directly from the pressure side of the pump, from where it circulates back to the suction side of the pump. By using a manual clutch, the power of the engine is transmitted to the pump. The clutch handle is mounted next to the pump. At the rear of the unit there is a 120-litre fuel tank.
The pressure head of the pump has 3 x 3in and 1 x 4in pressure outlets with ball valves and on both sides. The pump and pressure valves are equipped with heating lines for winter use. Engine coolant circulates in the heating line. When heating is not required, the heating line valves may be closed. The pressure head can be customized.
The pump unit is equipped with five pieces of 8ft suction hoses (2.5m) equipped with Storz fittings. One of the hoses is connected to a suction strainer.
The switches and gauges used to control the pump unit are located at the LCD control panel. And there are powerful LED working lights all over pump unit.
The skid of the unit is made in aluminium. There are four lifting shackles in the roof of the unit, and lifting chains can be adjusted in alignment according to the unit’s centre of gravity, which facilitates easy and steady helicopter transportation. Firefighting power for challenging locations
The pump unit is taken to a water source to supply water to the location of the fire. Pumps can also be connected in a series to quickly build a comprehensive and efficient water line for firefighting activities. Naturally ASL can be used together with mobile Esteri CAFS unit too.
The maximum ASL model yields 10,000 litres per minute, at a pressure of 10 bar. A helicopter equipped with such a high-performance pump would be sufficient for many large fires.
Equipped with a standard 120-litre fuel tank, Esteri ASL’s operating time is 5−7 hours with one tank, depending on the operating load. An extensive operation can be taken care of with just the one full tank, as many fires can already be contained and controlled within that time.
Of course, the transportation of this pump unit to a location may require a slightly different planning and resource specification from the relevant field management.

Esteri group has delivered various pump units for process protection and fire protection to large Finnish industrial sites. If large industrial operators, such as ports and factories, were to acquire these pumps in cooperation with rescue services, this would also improve the economic benefits of business life and fire safety, thus providing the entire community with greater fire safety. If Esteri ASL-type equipment were located in strategically correct locations in different parts of the country, it would cover many larger wildfires. If pumps were available, they could be quickly transferred from one place to another by means of cooperation with the authorities and thus achieve large financial savings.
