Safety Design in Buildings, Dammam Conference October 10, 2018, Sheraton Dammam
SDiB is the leading debating platform for safety and fire professionals in the construction industry. Initiated in collaboration with Intersec in 2012, the Safety Design in Buildings Campaign debates safety standards and practices in the built environment. Expert Talks discuss improved protection of people and buildings by looking at trends in the GCC and construction sector.
The event brings leading Fire Safety Consultants, Architects, Engineers and Testing Experts together with Safety System Suppliers to give updates on industry standards and provide a debating platform for best practice.
The conference programs in Dammam will feature presentations and discussions including:
Retrofitting for Fire Safety: Assessing operational and business risks and incentives of retrofitting cladding for improved fire safety.
Using tools and technologies of BIM, VR, AR & 3D modeling to create optimal fire safety strategies and building operations.
Achieving fire safety in the construction phase: How to best involve the design team to mitigate fire safety risks.
Promoting an organisational culture of prioritising safety: from design, planning, implementation and building operation.
Meeting NFPA standards and Fire Safety considerations for high-security and military installations.
… and more

Session I : Retrofitting for Fire Safety
Chairman : Andy Dean, Head of Facades | WSP
09:10 – 09:30
“Opening Keynote: Fire Protection In Buildings Under Construction”
Many building fires in Saudi Arabia occur during the construction phase. The ongoing increase in construction will likely lead to more construction-related fires. The owner of the property confirms a program preventing fires of projects under construction to be followed up with implementation that complies with the provisions of the standard. Among overlooked requirements are escape routes and transition distances. This presentation will look at eliminating unsafe practices and keeping safety a priority. Drawing on experience from risk assessments an overview will be given on control concepts, regulations and applicable EU, UK, US, and NFPA codes.
Major Khalid Abdullah Almutairi, Dammam Civil Defense
09:30 – 09:45
“Fire Protection Engineering And Safety Standards Of U.S. Army And Air Force (TBC)”
This presentation will discuss the US Military Regulations and their relation to Foreign Building Codes and Standards in particular the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC) 3-600-01 “Fire Protection Engineering for Facilities” as they relate to fire and life safety for Foreign Military construction.
Gregory M. Michaels, P.E., Fire Protection Engineer | US Army Corps of Engineers

“”Flammable And Toxic Release Mitigation In High Hazard Facilities”
This presentation will look at the key considerations for Process Safety Management (PSM) including Process Hazard Analysis (PHA)
and carrying out Hazard and Operability Studies (HAZOP) and doing Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA) and Dust Hazard Analysis (DHA) in industrial facilities.
Tim Shelton, Senior Process Safety Consultant | Jensen Hughes
10:15 – 10:30
“The Tools To Verify Fire Safety Of Products”
Standards and Codes are used extensively to establish performance criteria of products and systems to ensure Fire Safety is realised as designed. The tools to establish conformity to the these standards and codes have been evolving to play catch up with evolving supply chains of material supplies. This presentation aims to expand the knowledge and understanding of the tools used to demonstrate and validate conformity of products and systems needed to ensure Fire Safety.
Abhishek Chhabra, Market Development Manager | Thomas Bell-Wright International Consultants

“Integration of Passive Fire Safety Code Requirements in Building Design using BIM”
BIM (Building Information Modeling) helps achieve operational safety in complex networks of Building Management Systems (BMS) and helps to effectively manage the integration of specifications in the design stage to enable compliance with requirements for approvals and minimise cost and delays from making changes and modifications in the construction phase.
Altaf Afridi, Deputy Vice President Marketing, MEA, dormakaba
12:00 – 12:15
“Digital Health And Safety”
Digital transformation is impacting the construction at an ever-increasing rate. As Safety is an integral part of construction it is inevitable that it will not remain untouched. This session aims to introduce participants to the latest BIM specification from the British Standards Institute PAS 1192-6:2018 and what it means for the management of safety-related information in the BIM era; the use of 4D models, structured risk parameters and a ‘single-source-of-truth’ philosophy. Additionally, the inherent benefits of digitising a notoriously conservative industry will be discussed from the evolution of BIMs to virtual and augmented reality assets to aid with risk visualisation and safety training.
Prakash Senghani, Digital Project Delivery Lead – Construction Services | AECOM
12:15 – 12:45

TRAINING WORKSHOP
Featuring Sharron Halpert From Halpert Life Safety Consulting (New York)
How rated assemblies are tested and how common installations may fail (ASTM E 119, ASTM E1966, ASTM E814)
Codes and standards can be dry and boring. Not in this class! Sharron brings them to life in the classroom and explains how they immediately relate to construction. In this training session, Sharron brings shows how to improve the level of life safety on your project and reducing your liability by improving the quality of workmanship you provide, making your community safer for those who live, work and play in the buildings you create. It will also help protect the first responders in a fire scenario.
This workshop will show how rated walls, rated joints and through penetration firestops are tested and how understanding this information will benefit your construction project? The information-packed class is designed to help you think about your projects differently and increase your understanding of the importance of firestop and passive fire protection.
